Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto YHUH. Leviticus 23:27

Leviticus 23:27 tells us we shall celebrate it on the 10th of the 7th month, verse 28 says it is a DAY of atonement. What is this Sabbath called? The DAY of Atonement, or YOM Kippur. I must make sure to note that the word, yom, IS in the Hebrew for the name of this Sabbath in the text, in verse 28, when He calls it a DAY of atonement for us. So the DAY of Atonement is kept on the 10th DAY of the 7th month, but we are to begin this Sabbath of rest and afflicting our souls on the evening before, on the 9th, according to verse 32.
Why did I stress that the name of this appointed time is the DAY of Atonement? We need to determine which date we keep the Sabbath during the DAY, or daylight portion of this appointed time. This is important to understand, because some assert that one should start fasting on the afternoon of the 9th day of the 7th month, because in Biblical thought, there are 2 evenings found in scripture, one that begins after solar noon, when the sun begins to descend, and lasts until what we call evening, after the setting of the sun, which is the 2nd evening. So in regards to Passover, scripture instructs us to slaughter the lamb BETWEEN the evenings. So some are confused with the references to evening in scripture, and think that maybe when YHUH says “evening” in regards to the Day of Atonement, that maybe He means we should begin fasting after solar noon, at the 1st evening, or beginning of the afternoon, on the 9th, instead of at the end of the afternoon period, or the 2nd evening on the 9th. There’s only one DAY of Atonement, and that’s found and kept on the 10th day of the month, not the 9th.
While the sun is up, that is day. The day is made up of morning and evening, and evening is what we call afternoon. It can also include the twilight period between sunset and night, or darkness. Context is needed to determine what part of the evening scripture is referring to for different references to evening.
Sacrifices were always slaughtered and offered to YHUH during the day, not at night. The Yom Kippur offerings mentioned in Leviticus 16 and Numbers 29:7-11 were offered during the day, on the Day of Atonement, on the 10th day of the 7th month, not on the 9th.
We also do not observe Yom Kippur on the Seventh Day Sabbath. By that, I mean that the Gregorian week does not work with Yom Kippur or the luni-solar calendar. The luni-solar Sabbath, found by counting sevens from the New Moon each month, NEVER lands on Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur never falls on the Seventh Day Sabbath. The Sabbaths are on the 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th days of the month every month, so Yom Kippur always occurs on the 2nd day of the week.
So what scriptural grounds do I have for claiming that Yom Kippur can never fall on the Seventh Day of the week? Well, we read in Leviticus 23 that this is a time for afflicting ourselves. We are never supposed to afflict ourselves on the Seventh Day Sabbath. We are never supposed to fast that day. That is a day of feasting. There was always bread made for and before the Seventh Day Sabbath. It’s a time to rejoice and eat and be satisfied:
6. And behold the commandment regarding the Sabbaths–I have written (them) down for thee and all the judgments of its laws. 7. Six days wilt thou labour, but on the seventh day is the Sabbath of YHUH your Aluhym.In it ye shall do no manner of work, ye and your sons, and your men-servants and your maid-servants, and all your cattle and the sojourner also who is with you. 8. And the man that doeth any work on it shall die: whoever desecrateth that day, whoever lieth with (his) wife or whoever saith he will do something on it, that he will set out on a journey thereon in regard to any buying or selling: and whoever draweth water thereon which he had not prepared for himself on the sixth day, and whoever taketh up any burden to carry it out of his tent or out of his house shall die. 9. Ye shall do no work whatever on the Sabbath day save that ye have prepared for yourselves on the sixth day, so as to eat, and drink, and rest, and keep Sabbath from all work on that day, and to bless YHUH your Aluhym, who has given you a day of festival, and a holy day: and a day of the holy kingdom for all Israel is this day among their days for ever. 10. For great is the honour which YHUH hath given to Israel that they should eat and drink and be satisfied on this festival day, and rest thereon from all labour which belongeth to the labour of the children of men, save burning frankincense and bringing oblations and sacrifices before HaAdon for days and for Sabbaths. 11. This work alone shall be done on the Sabbath-days in the sanctuary of HaAdon your Aluhym; that they may atone for Israel with sacrifice continually from day to day for a memorial well-pleasing before YHUH, and that He may receive them always from day to day according as thou hast been commanded. 12. And every man who doeth any work thereon, or goeth a journey, or tilleth (his) farm, whether in his house or any other place, and whoever lighteth a fire, or rideth on any beast, or travelleth by ship on the sea, and whoever striketh or killeth anything, or slaughtereth a beast or a bird, or whoever catcheth an animal or a bird or a fish, or whoever fasteth or maketh war on the Sabbaths: 13. The man who doeth any of these things on the Sabbath shall die, so that the children of Israel shall observe the Sabbaths according to the commandments regarding the Sabbaths of the land, as it is written in the tables, which He gave into my hands that I should write out for thee the laws of the seasons, and the seasons according to the division of their days. So the Book of Jubilees (which is not Jewish commentary, not simply man’s account of history, but rather does claim to be “thus saith YHUH”, written by the messengers of YHUH, containing prophecies that have come to pass and prophecies of Messiah Yahusha that uphold the law of Moses) stated in verses 12-13 above that any man who fasts on the Seventh Day Sabbath shall die. Yet, Leviticus 23 stated that any man who does not afflict himself on Yom Kippur shall be cut off from among his people.
For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people. Leviticus 23:29
So what is a Saturday worshipper to do if the 10th lands on a Saturday? If you fast on the Seventh Day, according to Jubilees, you will be cut off, and if you don’t fast, according to Leviticus 23, you will die. That’s quite a conundrum for those who are observing Saturday in the place of the Seventh Day Sabbath! No worries for them I guess, because they’re assured by the false shepherds and rabbis that the Book of Jubilees is not authoritative, not scripture, and can be ignored, assuring them that Yom Kippur CAN land on the Seventh Day Sabbath, despite what the Book of Jubilees states. For the luni-solar Sabbath keeper, however, there is no conflict, because the 10th day of the 7th month will never fall on a lunar Sabbath. I believe the answer for the Saturday worshipper is to repent of Saturday and the teachings of the rabbis and false shepherds that go along with it.
Yom Kippur is not the sole annual appointed time that conflicts with the Gregorian week. The New Moons, Shabuot, the wave sheaf, the 10th day of the 1st month, all of these have commandments assigned to them that conflict with the Gregorian week, and this conflict is not found when one observes the luni-solar week, according to the scriptures.
There’s also the question of which month is the correct month to observe the 7th month and Yom Kippur. There is no end to the argument about when to begin the year, and this decision can have a serious consequence for those who want to observe the appointed times in the right season. So how does one determine which month this is, so that Yom Kippur is indeed observed in the 7th month? I’ve found some clues in Genesis 1:14:
And Aluhum said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years..
Did you catch that? The lights in the heavens are for signs, and for seasons (appointed times), and for days, and for YEARS. So when do we begin the year? According to the signs in the lights in the heavens! So which light signals are we looking for to tell us when the first month is? I found more on that in 1 Enoch, Chapter 71:
6.First proceeds forth that great luminary, which is called the sun; the orb of which is as the orb of heaven, the whole of it being replete with splendid and flaming fire.
7. Its chariot, where it ascends, the wind blows.
8. The sun sets in heaven, and, returning by the north, to proceed towards the east, is conducted so as to enter by that gate, and illuminate the face of heaven.
9. In the same manner it goes forth in the first month by a great gate.
10. It goes forth through the fourth of those six gates, which are at the rising of the sun.
11. And in the fourth gate, through which the sun with the moon proceeds, in the first part of it, there are twelve open windows; from which issues out a flame, when they are opened at their proper periods.
12. When the sun rises in heaven, it goes forth through this fourth gate thirty days, and by the fourth gate in the west of heaven on a level with it descends.
13. During that period the day is lengthened from the day, and the night curtailed from the night for thirty days. And then the day is longer by two parts than the night.
14. The day is precisely ten parts, and the night is eight.
15. The sun goes forth through this fourth gate, and sets in it…Enoch 71:6-15

So DURING the first month, we find a period of time in which the day is lengthened and the night shortened, so that the day now becomes longer than the night. That, to me, sounds like the period of time immediately following equal day and night. Please contact me if you don’t know when this occurs, but you can look it up on sites like timeanddate.com, to see when the day is 12 hours, and the night is 12 hours, making them equal. I don’t go by equinox, or March 21st, as that’s not actual, it’s an average. Look up equal day and night for your location. I’ve found in the Northern Hemisphere those dates are March 16-18 these days. We have come to beginning the year the New Moon BEFORE equal day/night, so that the day becomes longer than the night DURING the first month, as Enoch 71:9-13 describes.
I could be interpreting Enoch 71 incorrectly, but I’m convinced the key to understanding the beginning, middle, and end of a year are found in Enoch 71, so here’s where we should all start to dialogue, not with Philo, the Talmud, or the Jewish Encyclopedia. I’m open to discussing scriptures like Enoch and the Bible with anyone, but please, don’t come to the table supporting your beliefs on something other than scripture. I’m not interested in what your rabbi or professor thinks. I’d like to hear what SCRIPTURES YOU have to support YOUR faith. Our faith, our “whys”, can’t be based on traditions of men, we must stick to 2-3 witnesses from scripture to explain to others why we do and believe what we do, because that’s what scripture says, and that’s what really convinces believers who hear the witnesses and test and judge with righteousness. Yes, I do consider Enoch to be Scripture.
I thought this information would be helpful for those who are or who know someone who is stuck in this Gregorian week rut, and trying to figure out what they need to repent of this Yom Kippur, or those following the Karaite barley reports, or the Hillel II calendar, rather than the scriptures, regarding the beginning of the year…I understand the month is called “abib” for a reason, and I believe that that if we use the lights in the heavens to begin the year as the Bible, Jubilees, and Enoch teach, the barley will become ready for the sheaf DURING the month, when it is supposed to, NOT BEFORE it. I know, it takes faith to believe it will be ready at the appointed time. We could all use a little more faith. There is no scripture stating that we need to have the barley sheaf ready for the harvest in order to begin the year, IF YHUH intended that to be the case, I believe He would require us to wave the sheaf BEFORE the year begins, or on the 1st of the month, not DURING the first month. Think about it.
…Please don’t believe the lies of those who make false claims about the apocryphal books, some of which are even quoted and mentioned in the Bible itself. Read them for yourselves. If you believe them to teach a solar-only calendar, or that they contradict the Bible, please hear all the witnesses and start a conversation and ask someone who sees it differently and consider that you might be missing something, that you might be giving ear to slander against YHUH’s prophets, that you might be guilty of blasphemy, before you be guilty of making a false judgement about these scrolls, and the word of YHUH written in them. Don’t ask an unbeliever about these books, no matter what their “expertise”, as they are sure to give a false report. These are things to repent of this Yom Kippur…
